How it works

Each image is decoded by your browser and re-encoded in the format you pick, using the browser's own encoders. JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a background color you choose (white by default). JPG and WebP take a quality setting; PNG is lossless. Files are recognized by their actual contents rather than their extension.

Common use cases

  • Turning a WebP or AVIF image into a JPG or PNG that older software can open
  • Converting PNG screenshots to JPG or WebP to save space
  • Converting a JPG to PNG for a tool that requires it

Frequently asked questions

Does this upload my images anywhere?
No. Images are converted entirely in your browser and are never sent to a server.
Which formats can I convert?
It reads JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF, and writes JPG, PNG or WebP.
What happens to transparency when converting to JPG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose. PNG and WebP keep transparency.
Does converting a JPG to PNG improve its quality?
No. PNG keeps the image exactly as it is now, including any JPG compression marks, and the file is usually larger.
Why does it say my browser cannot create WebP files?
A few browsers can open WebP but not write it. Choose JPG or PNG instead, or use a current version of Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
