How it works

Each WebP image is decoded by your browser and saved as a PNG. PNG is lossless and supports transparency, so the picture, including any transparent areas, is stored exactly as it was decoded. Animated WebP files are not supported: only the first frame is converted.

Common use cases

  • Editing a WebP image in software that cannot open it
  • Keeping the transparent background of a logo or sticker saved as WebP
  • Converting web graphics for use in documents and slides

Frequently asked questions

Are my WebP files uploaded?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and the files never leave your device.
Is transparency kept?
Yes. PNG supports transparency, so transparent areas stay transparent.
Is any quality lost?
No more than the WebP already lost. The PNG stores the decoded image exactly.
Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?
WebP compresses much harder than PNG. A larger file is expected; if size matters and transparency does not, JPG is smaller.
