How it works
Each PNG is decoded by your browser and re-encoded as a JPG using the browser's own encoder. JPG cannot store transparency, so any transparent parts of the PNG are filled with a background color: white unless you pick another. The quality slider trades file size against detail; 90 is a good default.
Common use cases
- Shrinking large PNG screenshots or photos before sending them
- Uploading to a form or website that only accepts JPG
- Saving storage space on photos that were exported as PNG
Frequently asked questions
- Are my PNG files uploaded?
- No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and the files never leave your device.
- What happens to transparent backgrounds?
- JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid color. It is white by default and you can choose any color.
- Will the JPG look worse than the PNG?
- JPG is a lossy format, so some fine detail is traded for a much smaller file. For photos the difference at quality 90 is hard to see. For screenshots with sharp text or flat colors, PNG or WebP stays crisper.
- How much smaller will the file be?
- For photos, a JPG is often 5 to 10 times smaller than the same image as a PNG. For simple graphics the saving is smaller.
