How it works

Each image is decoded by your browser and re-encoded through a canvas at the quality you choose, using the browser's own JPG and WebP encoders. PNG is a lossless format, so the quality setting does not apply to it and the saving is usually small; switching the output to WebP gives a much smaller file and keeps transparency. If the result is not smaller than your original, the tool says so instead of offering a bigger file. Because the pixels are redrawn, the output carries none of the original's metadata, such as the camera model or GPS position.

Common use cases

  • Getting a photo under an upload or email attachment size limit
  • Making website images load faster
  • Removing location and camera metadata from a photo before sharing it

Frequently asked questions

Does this upload my images anywhere?
No. Images are compressed entirely in your browser and are never sent to a server.
Why did my PNG barely get smaller?
PNG is lossless, so there is no quality to trade for size. Choose WebP as the output format: it keeps transparency and is usually far smaller.
What quality should I use?
Around 75 is a good starting point for photos: a large saving with little visible difference. Go lower for thumbnails, higher when fine detail matters.
Is metadata such as GPS location kept?
No. The image is redrawn before it is saved, which leaves out EXIF metadata including location and camera details.
What are the limits?
Up to 20 images at a time, each 50 MB or smaller. Animated GIFs are not supported: only the first frame is used.
