How it works
Each WebP image is decoded by your browser and re-encoded as a JPG. If the WebP has transparent areas they are filled with a background color, white by default, because JPG cannot store transparency. Animated WebP files are not supported: only the first frame is converted.
Common use cases
- Opening an image saved from a website in software that does not read WebP
- Uploading to a site that rejects WebP files
- Sharing an image with someone on an older device
Frequently asked questions
- Are my WebP files uploaded?
- No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and the files never leave your device.
- Why do websites give me WebP files?
- WebP files are smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality, so many sites serve them to load faster. Not every app has caught up.
- Will I lose quality?
- A little, because both formats are usually lossy and the image is encoded a second time. At quality 90 it is rarely noticeable.
- My WebP has a transparent background. What happens to it?
- It is filled with the background color you choose. To keep the transparency, convert to PNG instead.
