How it works
Each JPG is decoded by your browser and re-encoded as WebP at the quality you choose. WebP usually needs less space than JPG for the same visible quality, but because the JPG was already compressed once, converting at a very high quality setting can produce a larger file. Lower the quality a little if that happens.
Common use cases
- Preparing photos for a website or blog
- Reducing the size of a photo gallery
- Meeting a page-speed recommendation to serve images in a modern format
Frequently asked questions
- Are my JPG files uploaded?
- No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and the files never leave your device.
- How much smaller is WebP than JPG?
- Typically around a quarter to a third smaller at similar visible quality, though it varies a lot from image to image.
- The WebP came out larger than my JPG. Why?
- Your JPG was probably already heavily compressed. Re-encoding it at a high quality setting cannot make it smaller; try a quality of 75 to 80.
- Is metadata such as location kept?
- No. The image is redrawn before it is saved, which leaves out EXIF metadata including GPS position.
