How it works
Words are counted as whitespace-separated runs of characters. Sentences are split on runs of . ! or ? — a simple heuristic, not true sentence-boundary detection, so "Mr. Smith left." counts as two. Reading time assumes 200 words per minute (silent reading) and speaking time assumes 130 words per minute — both are commonly cited averages, not a measurement of your own pace.
Common use cases
- Checking an essay or article against a word count requirement
- Estimating how long a speech or presentation script will take to deliver
- Keeping a social media post or meta description under a character limit
Frequently asked questions
- Does this upload my text anywhere?
- No. Counting happens entirely in your browser, live as you type — nothing is sent to a server.
- How is "reading time" calculated?
- Word count divided by 200 words per minute, a commonly cited average silent-reading speed, rounded up to the nearest minute.
- Why does an abbreviation like "Mr." throw off the sentence count?
- Sentences are detected by splitting on . ! and ? — a simple rule, not real grammar parsing, so any period is treated as an ending, abbreviations included.
