How it works
Each photo is decoded by your browser and re-encoded as a JPG at the quality you choose. Lower quality means a smaller file and, eventually, visible blockiness; around 75 keeps most photos looking the same at a fraction of the size. If a photo does not get smaller, the tool says so rather than handing you a bigger file. For an even smaller result, switch the output to WebP or reduce the photo's dimensions with the Image Resizer.
Common use cases
- Getting a photo under an email or upload size limit
- Shrinking camera photos before posting them online
- Saving space on a folder of pictures
Frequently asked questions
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. Compression runs entirely in your browser and the photos never leave your device.
- How do I get a JPG under a specific size, like 1 MB?
- Lower the quality until the size shown is under your limit. If it still is not small enough at around 50, reduce the dimensions with the Image Resizer first.
- Does this change the photo's dimensions?
- No. Width and height stay the same; only the compression changes.
- Is the location data in my photo removed?
- Yes. The photo is redrawn before it is saved, which leaves out EXIF metadata such as GPS position and camera model.
