How it works
HEIC photos are decoded by libheif, the reference open-source HEIF decoder, compiled to WebAssembly and run in your browser. Each decoded photo is saved as a PNG, which stores it without any further compression loss. The decoder is downloaded the first time you convert a photo.
Common use cases
- Editing an iPhone photo in software that cannot open HEIC
- Keeping full quality through several rounds of editing
- Converting iPhone screenshots saved as HEIC
Frequently asked questions
- Are my photos uploaded?
- No. Photos are decoded and converted entirely in your browser.
- Should I choose PNG or JPG for iPhone photos?
- JPG for sharing: the files are several times smaller. PNG when you plan to edit the photo and want no additional quality loss.
- Why are the PNG files so large?
- PNG stores every pixel exactly. A 12-megapixel photo can easily be 15 MB or more as a PNG.
- Why is the first photo slower?
- The HEIC decoder is a few megabytes and loads the first time you convert. Later photos are quicker.
